Pug106 Engine Tuning (Nitrous Injection)
Nitrous is a good method of getting lots of extra performance without major modifications to the engine, but it is only a temporary boost in power, and the engine and gearbox will suffer if you opt to go for a big power nitrous system. Nitrous systems boost engine performance by making the engine work very efficiently for a short period of time by injecting nitrous oxide and extra fuel into the engine. The nitrous oxide is very cold and provides much more oxygen for the combustion process to work than you could ever obtain through normal induction systems. Most kits are available with injection jets offering increases of 25 bhp, 50 bhp, etc, up to 150 bhp, but on road cars the most you should consider would be 75 bhp, and even at that the car may be overstressed. Either way, you will find a noticable improvement in performance when using the nitrous injection system, but remember this is only a temporary boost in power, so the car will be as normal when the nitrous system is switched off. Nitrous should not be considered as a way of getting more performance out of an engine under normal driving conditions. It is only to be used for short periods of time, say for a 1/4 mile sprint or for rapid overtaking. Progressive Injection Controllers As well as the nitrous kit itself, there are progressive injection systems available that will control the flow of the nitrous into the engine inlet, therefore providing a more progressive increase in power when the system is switched on, rather than just dumping the stuff into the engine, which could cause loss of stability and traction. These systems are a must for road cars running the higher pressure jets, as the instant power increase when the system is switched on would almost certainly cause the car to become undrivable.
