Pug106 Engine Tuning (Gearbox)

With big power increases, you are likely to run into problems with your gearbox.

Most likely problem is with the clutch as the power increase will cause higher wear on the standard unit.

Quickshift Gear Linkages

By shortening the throw of the gear lever between gear changes, drivers can keep the car in gear longer minimising the loss of drive. It also has the effect of removing the clunky feel of the standard linkages and therefore providing a smoother and sportier feel to the gear shift.

Performance Clutches

If you have a GTI/S16 model, which has the 200mm clutch, then unless it's driven very hard then the standard clutch should do alright until you start to approach 200 bhp. After that then an uprated clutch would be required to ensure no torque is lost from the engine.

If you have one of the other models with the 180mm clutch then an uprated item should be considered as soon as any serious modification is done on the engine.

Altered Ratios

One thing that has been noticed about the 106 is it's gear ratios aren't evenly spaced and too long considering it's a small lightweight car that doesn't need to be able to do 140 mph. The simple answer to this is to use the ratios found in the 106 Rallye, although there are many various options, all suited to the different engine specs.

The 106 Rallye ratios are shorter, more evenly spaced and will improve acceleration over the standard ratios found in other models. It is also wise to use such ratios if your running 16" or 17" rims, as it will compensate for the extra rolling radius on the tyres, which hurts performance.

Limited Slip Differentials

The use of a limited slip differential on heavily modded cars can make great wheel traction improvements. It is common for very low or stiff 106's to lift wheels, even on slower corners, so keeping power going to the wheel with road grip will help tremendously.
