Pug106 Brake Upgrades (Rear Disk Conversions)
Around 80% of the braking abilities is provided by the front brakes so an upgrade at the front of the car is always the first area that should get attention, unless your just after the added looks of rear disks on your car. Rear disks wont provide a huge increase in braking ability, and infact may seem worse than drums in some situations, but on the whole they do provide a smoother and more progressive feel which is very useful when braking hard from high speeds. Expect to pay around £200-500 for a second hand axle, or as much as £900 for a new one. If you are searching for a 2nd hand axle, you must make sure you get a straight one. If you buy an axle which isn't 100% you may destoy the fine handling and increase your tyre wear. It's hard to tell if an axles 100% or not without actually fitting it to the car and having it checked out through electronic wheel alignmentm, but throughly check that nothing is visibly bent or twisted. The standard Peugeot disks and pads on a GTI axle should do the job perfectly well, although a set of fast-road disks will improve both the performance and looks, not that disks on the rear of a non-GTI won't. Fast road pads at the rear are unlikely to make any braking improvement as they require heat for optimum use, and at the back of the car, they wont get enough use to warm up as required.
