The standard brakes on the 106 range aren't really very good and will always require a fair bit of effort to get the car to come to a standstill in an emergency, or late breaking situation, so what can be done to sort this out?

Well, big brake conversions are always going to be the best way to go.

The 106 GTI currently comes with 247mm vented disks, with 247mm rear disks which, together, do provide reasonable braking power under normal conditions, but the lower models come with 247mm solid disks with rear drums, which have been found to be inadequate on the 106.

The first plan of action of most non-sports model owners would be to find a fit the front brakes off a GTI, but for even better performance, you can fit the 288mm front setup from the Peugeot 306 GTI-6 although these will only fit under 15" wheels, or larger, or another option are the 266mm setup found on most other 306's and more recently, 206's sorts models such as the GTI and XSi.

These conversions can be done for as little as £200 using second hand parts, up to £550 for brand new, but either way will give you better braking power, which is required on any tuned 206.

The use of performance disks and pads with the bigger calipers will further improve braking performance, but using standard Peugeot disks and pads with one of the oversize conversions can save a little money and are perfectly good at doing the job.

There are other options avialable such as AP Racing or Wilwood 4 pot calipers with disks similar to the GTI-6, or even Taxox/Red-Dot 305mm 6 pot upgrades, but these are overkill and cost a fair bit more than the Peugeot made options.
